Gynecological Care

At DWH, our goal is to partner with our patients in finding solutions to their gynecologic issues and concerns. We take the time to listen carefully and while providing education we offer suggestions and discuss options that are available. We provide well woman care and concentrate on preventative health and education, including nutrition counseling, screening for breast, cervical, ovarian, uterine, colon cancer and osteoporosis screening and prevention.

Breast Health

Regular mammograms save lives! All women over the age of 40 should have an annual mammogram. However, an annual clinical breast exam by a trained provider, such as one of our physicians or midwives, and monthly self breast exams are also an important part of early detection of breast cancer. Women with a family history of breast cancer may need to consider more extensive screening options and during your annual well women exam, our providers can review that with you.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a surgical technique, which is used to help with the diagnosis and sometimes surgical management of certain gynecologic conditions. These include but are not limited to: Endometriosis, Adhesions, Fibroids, Ovarian Cysts, Ectopic Pregnancy, Infertility and Sterilization.

The benefits of laparopscopy include a shorter hospital stay, smaller incisions, and a rapid recovery. This is due to the small size of the incisions, which are made in the patient's abdomen. Visualization and operative procedures are accomplished through miniature television cameras and surgical instruments.

Dr. Segil, Dr. Bleyenberg, and Dr. DeYoung are all highly skilled laparscopic surgeons who have extensive experience managing a variety of surgical situations.

Alternatives to Hysterectomy - Endometrial Ablation

Excessive Menstrual bleeding (Menorrhagia) is not a normal situation, however as many as 20% of the US women describe this symptom as something that can have significant impact on their daily activities, sometimes limiting their ability to leave the home.

Three mainstays of therapy have existed for treatment of excessive bleeding: Medical (such as low dose birth control pills, other hormones or non-steriodal medications), hysterectomy, and endometrial ablation. Traditionally endometrial ablation is preformed with use of electrocautery or a laser. Now a new option, Thermal ablation is available. The goal of ablation is to remove the endometrial lining from the uterus. This is the thin lining inside the uterus, which is responsible for menses. With thermal ablation this lining is burned with the use of a hot water balloon. The advantages being increased safety, combined with decreased operating room time.
