Urinary Incontinence

Urinary Incontinence affects greater than 17 million Americans. Urinary incontinence is more prevalent in women than in men, affecting up to 25% of women under age 65, and up to 30% of women over the age of 60. The two major categories of incontinence are Urge and Stress incontinence. Urge incontinence occurs when the detrusser muscle (muscle wall of the bladder) is overactive, leading to loss of urine and the nickname overactive bladder.

Stress incontinence occurs when the pressure inside the bladder is greater than urethral pressure, which can occur during any number of stress activities that lead to an increase in intraabdominal pressure, such as sneezing, laughing, lifting, and running.

Causes range from simple urinary tract infections, to muscular disorders, and frequently pelvic support problems. Treatments include, Physical therapy, medical therapy, and surgical corrections. Modern medical treatments (pills) have dramatically decreased side effects compared to their predecessors, and surgical therapies can now include same day procedures that allow for rapid recovery and return to function with excellent success rates.

Proper treatment starts with proper and complete diagnosis. At Dover Women's Health we have the latest in computer assisted fiber optic diagnostic equipment. In the course of a 15 minute test we can help determine the correct treatment for why you are leaking urine and help to customize a therapy program that meets your individual requirements.
